Yet, with two years in the making, the audience perhaps needs a reminder - or at least an outline - of the events, and it is exactly what this useful little book does.
The Arab Uprisings: An Introduction, is precisely that: a concise summary of the events that provides a chronology, a useful run-down of each country's journey, the result and, most importantly, the analysis behind it all. Drawing from leading experts and their own circumspect knowledge, the authors take their reader through the Arab Uprisings, step by step, highlighting the similarities and the crucial differences that help explain the contrasting outcomes. There is analysis of the role of the military, the demographics, the global economic crisis; the role of the international community - both as it is directly affected by the new reality, and as it formulates its response to it; there is analysis of the political structures in place, and what needs to be done to ameliorate each one of them, and the reminder of the need to reconcile the two mandates of the Arab constitutions - the one that upholds the interests of the Arab umma, and the one that guarantees civil liberties. The section I find particularly interesting was the one that discuss why the uprisings happened when they did - but you will have to buy the book to find out.

The Arab Uprisings - an Introduction is a concise and insightful summary of the uprisings that have changed the course of events in the MENA region considerably. It's not overloaded with too many details, but still gives a great overview of the background, causes and key events of the Arab Spring. The authors are able to write about a complex topic in an easily accessible and interesting manner. I'd definitely recommend this for everyone with a keen interest in the Arab Spring, but also for people who feel that they still have to catch up with one of the most important political events of the 21st century.
This book is a great introduction to a complex phenomenon which so many of us watched enfolding live on TV. While often trying to catch up with the daily events like protests, police violence and elections it was sometimes hard to take a step back and think about the big picture and why these things happened. "The Arab Uprisings An Introduction" does exactly that. The authors established not only a chronology of events but also examined the circumstances in the key countries. The book presents a good mixture of specific information for each country and analysis of general patterns. Both are crucial to understand why the "Arab Spring" happened in the way it did.
If you are looking for a concise analysis of what has happened and what this means for the future, I highly recommend this book.
